Dan Carter

Dan Carter has played a significant role as a supporter, leader and community champion for better education and better opportunities for all. Emerging from a background of immense personal challenge and tragedy, Dan has become an inspiration and role model to individuals throughout Canada motivating them to achieve their full potential and to lend a hand to their fellow citizens.

His deep commitment to making a difference to those in need has led to the establishment of a number of community initiatives, including the Hope Centre for Learning at the Oshawa Community Health Centre, the annual Day of Hope and Leadership which has become a signature event for local community leaders, and the Isobel Carter Youth Fund which provides educational bursaries for youth.

Most recently, he opened the Carter Centre for Media and Cultural Studies in a refurbished building in downtown Oshawa, Ontario. Dan is also author of “It’s the Right Time Now” chronicling his own life story and his rise to success. He currently works as a television broadcaster and host where he raises awareness about challenges within the local community.

Dan’s leadership and contributions have been widely recognized within the broader community and he has received a number of honours and awards for his work, including Business Person of the Year Award from the Whitby Chamber of Commerce (2006) and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce (2011), the CAMH Courage to Come Back Award and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medallion. Dan was conferred this June with an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology.

Dan is the current Chair of the Board of Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health. He is also on the Board of Directors for Let Them Be Kids, a volunteer organization that builds playgrounds in high needs areas across Canada.
